Biological Information
Background Information:
POLQ is a low-fidelity DNA polymerase with a helicase activity that plays a key role in microhomology-mediated end-joining (MMEJ), required to repair double-strand breaks in DNA during mitosis. POLQ is expressed at low levels in healthy cells but is often overexpressed in cancer cells. Recent studies suggest that many cancers become reliant on POLQ to repair DNA damage and blocking POLQ may prevent some cancer cells from repairing their DNA, leading to cancer cell death.
