Biological Information
Background Information:
RECQ1 belongs to the RecQ family of helicases, including WRN, BLM, RECQ4 and RECQ5, which play critical roles in protecting and stabilizing the genome. RECQ1 is implicated in several cellular processes, including DNA repair, cell cycle and growth, telomere maintenance, and transcription. RECQ1 is overexpressed in a variety of cancers including glioblastoma, multiple myeloma, ovarian cancers, hematological cancers, hepatocellular carcinoma, head and neck, and tongue squamous cell carcinoma. Silencing RECQ1 in cancer cells has been shown to induce cell death, reduce tumor growth rate and decrease cancer cell migration and invasion. Furthermore, depletion of RECQ1 has been shown to sensitize cancer cells to a variety of chemotherapeutics suggesting that RECQ1 functions in DNA repair are important for resistance to these therapeutic agents in cancer.
